This Community Sport Referee course involves 3 hours of online training and 5 hours of in-person classroom training.  n mThe clinicwill be delivered by Gaelen Patterson.

The Community Sport Referee typically officiates athletes in the Learn to Train (male 9-12 +/- and female 8-11 +/-), Train to Train (male 12-14 +/- and female 11-13 +/-), and Active for Life (all ages) Long-Term Development stages.

Participants must be 14 years or older to participate (Please note, Water Polo Canada do not currently certify athletes age 14 and 15 as referees but they do permit their participation in the Community Sport Referee clinic).

Practical

In addition to the online and classroom portion of the course, participants will also be required to complete a practical portion.

The practical portion will require participants to provide a “sponsor” who will agree to provide a minimum of 30 minutes of supervision during a scrimmage or game, within the 60 days following the course, where they will help the referee with:

  • Blowing the whistle loudly and clearly

  • Following the play from good positions.

  • Clearly signalling with arms the direction of free throws.

  • Clearly showing player numbers for exclusions and goals.

  • Confirm the referee participant completed the supervised practical session

The course facilitator will contact each sponsor to ensure they understand the requirements. The sponsor must be either the head coach of a club affiliated to Water Polo West, or have significant experience in water polo and individually approved by the course facilitator. If registrants do not provide the name of a sponsor meeting these criteria, they will not be eligible to participate in the course. If participants do not complete the practical portion, with confirmation from the sponsor within 60 days, they will not pass the course.

The sponsor must be registered as a coach, player or volunteer with Water Polo West.
